Florida Label Requirements: Key Facts
Updated July 2026- Required elements: 6 — product name, maker name & address, ingredients, net weight, allergens, cottage food statement
- Ingredient order: Listed by weight, heaviest first
- Required statement: "Made in a cottage food operation that is not subject to Florida's food safety regulations."
- Allergens: All major allergens must be declared
- Applies to: Every package you sell, at every venue

Required Label Elements

1. Product Name
Use the common or usual name of the food. Be clear and descriptive.
✅ Good Examples:
- • "Chocolate Chip Cookies"
- • "Strawberry Jam"
- • "Sourdough Bread"
- • "Salted Caramel Brownies"
❌ Avoid:
- • Vague names like "Grandma's Special"
- • Made-up words without clarification
2. Ingredient List
List ALL ingredients in descending order by weight (heaviest first). Include sub-ingredients for compound items.
Example for Chocolate Chip Cookies:
Ingredients: Enriched wheat flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), sugar, butter (cream, salt), semi-sweet chocolate chips (sugar, chocolate, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, vanilla extract), eggs, brown sugar, vanilla extract (vanilla bean extractives, water, alcohol), baking soda, salt.
3. Allergen Warnings
Clearly identify if your product contains any of the major food allergens:

or include in bold within ingredient list
4. Net Weight or Quantity
State the net weight or count. Include both metric and imperial for products over 1 lb.
Examples:
- • "Net Wt. 8 oz (227g)" - for jams or spreads
- • "12 cookies (approx. 10 oz)" - for baked goods
- • "1 loaf - 16 oz (454g)" - for breads
- • "Net Wt. 4 oz" - for items under 1 lb
5. Producer Name & Address
Include your business name (or your name) and the complete street address where the product was made.

Privacy Note: This is your home address for cottage food operations. Some makers use a PO Box for contact but must list the production address on the label.
6. Required Cottage Food Statement ⚠️
This is MANDATORY. Florida law requires this exact statement on every cottage food product:
"Made in a cottage food operation that is not subject to Florida's food safety regulations."
⚠️ Important: This statement must appear word-for-word. Do not modify or paraphrase it.

Common Labeling Mistakes to Avoid
